In honor of Indigenous People's Day, join us for a K-12 teacher workshop on the history and legacy of the War for the Dawnland (also known as King Philip's War). This workshop will be led by Brad Lopes, Aquinnah Wampanoag scholar and Education & Public Programs Manager for the Aquinnah Cultural Center, and MHS Education. Together, we will explore the war's causes; strategies Indigenous and colonial communities employed during the war; and consequences of the war on Native nations with a focus on Wampanoag communities. 

Drawing on the MHS primary source set, War for the Dawnland: Reimagining King Philip’s War, we will closely analyze primary and secondary sources to better understand late 17th century Wampanoag perspectives and how and why these communities worked to protect their homelands and resist settler colonialism. We will consider the lasting impacts of the war and the ways in which they have resonated over time, and into the present day. We will also share strategies to teach vocabulary and ways to look at primary sources that center Indigenous perspectives.

This program is open to all who work with K-12 students. Upon completion of the workshop and assignments, teachers can earn 10 PDPs. Please email us with any questions at education@masshist.org.

MHS Education, with Brad Lopes, will be offering this same workshop in different locations around the state. All workshop participants will have the opportunity to receive one-on-one or small group feedback and instructional coaching from Brad Lopes after the workshop.
